The epicentre was 115 km at the northeast of the of Iquique, close to the border with Bolivia, and it happened Monday, at 6:45 p.m. local time (22:45 UTC).

Right after the occurrence of the earthquake, schools were evacuated, panic was generalized and the electrical power has been cut. The earthquake could be felt at the south of Peru and Bolivia, but there are not information about victims or damages in these countries. A very small earthquake was felt in some cities in Brazil, with no damages or victims apparently.

Foreclosure Options For Desperate Home Owners}

Submitted by: Gwen Eckley

Foreclosures are a major problem facing many people; especially home owners with equity. With the tight global economic situation, we have outlined several viable options along with some of its brief characteristics.

The first option listed here is known as Reverse Mortgage. For homeowners with equity in their homes; especially those aged 62 years and above. Reverse Mortgages need not be repaid unless owner of the home moves, sells the home, or in the event of death. There are basically 3 different kinds of Reverse Mortgage home loans to consider from:

–Single Purpose Reverse Mortgage

Generally a low cost loan is not readily available in every city. It is also normally used for specific purposes such as repairs and home improvements and in some cases, shortage of property taxes. This form of loan is usually available from government agencies and in some cases, non-profit organizations.

–Proprietary Reverse Mortgage

Owned or backed by private companies, this is the most expensive of the 3 loans available. Without the backing of any government and non-profit organizations, these forms of loans are generally offered with the purpose of making money. The characteristics of this loan is similar to that of the Federal Insured reverse mortgage.

–Federal Insured Reverse Mortgage

Backed by the US Department of Housing and Urban development (HUD), it appeals to the low income group as there is no need for medical and income requirements. Also known as home equity conversion mortgage or HECM, it may lead to a high cost (more than single purpose loans) if home owners do not stay for long periods. Can be used for any purpose and easily available in most US cities.

Another viable option is the balloon payment loan. This type of loan usually means the monthly payments are low and if paid within a few years, one can refinance their home to avoid balloon payments. However, it is this very method that has caused as much as 46% of homeowners to end up in foreclosures. It is a tempting but risky option.

The balloon payment loan relies on property values to rise above the initial loan as well as interest rates to be at a place where refinancing is a viable option. Herein lies the problem. What happens if by the time the balloon payment is due, your home value is less than required to refinance? Suddenly your stuck with a huge payment due and no way to cover this payment from a refinance.

The other difficulty can come with an increase in interest rates. Refinancing your home at a higher interest rate can create problems by increasing your monthly payment beyond your ability to keep up with the payments. Before considering this type of loan, make sure you speak to someone who has your best interests as the first priority, not the banks.

There are several other options available such as credit line, taking a second loan and enduring a prepayment penalty. Each and every of these methods comes with its pros and cons. There are always two sides to a coin and the best is to be armed with the knowledge and weigh the options carefully before arriving at a solution to combat foreclosures.

It is wise to learn as much as you can before discussing your financial options with your bank. When you have knowledge of your options, it is easier to ask the right questions.

Politically concerned movie Zootopia wins Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film

Wednesday, March 1, 2017

On Sunday, Disney’s Zootopia won the Oscars award for the Best Animated Feature Film at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony held at Los Angeles. Pixar’s animated short Piper won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film and Disney’s The Jungle Book won for Visual Effects.

Others competing with Zootopia in the category were Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, and Disney’s Moana. This was the first Oscar for directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore who were previously nominated for, respectively, Bolt and Wreck-It Ralph.

In the acceptance speech, director Byron Howard said, “About five years ago, almost six now, […] we got this crazy idea of talking about humanity with talking animals in the hopes that, when the film came out, it would make the world just a slightly better place.” The Disney movie addresses several social problems such as racism, sexism, prejudice, stereotyping, and fear. The New York Times said the parental guidance (PG) rated movie was “Funny, smart, thought-provoking — and musical, too.”

Before announcing the award, Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal said, “As a Mexican, as a Latin-American, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I’m against any form of wall that wants to separate us.” The movie was released in March, during the 2016 US presidential race.

In an interview with Variety, the directors of Zootopia said movies about bias and discrimination haven’t been Disney’s main focus, but during its production, “Things were not great in the world. […] It was more like we had our finger on something important right now and we really need to do our best to portray this as honestly as we can. Then with the election and the campaign, the real move towards governing by fear […] I don’t think we could have predicted it any closer with this film.”

With this win, the Walt Disney Company has won nine out of ten Best Animated Feature Film Oscars in the last decade, with Pixar Animation Studio winning six out of them. Zootopia also won Best Animated Film at the Annie Awards and the Golden Globe Awards.

Indigenous Australians told to “wash for fuel”

Thursday, December 9, 2004

MULAN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA — Under a draft plan of the Australian Federal Government’s “mutual obligation” agreements, members of the Aboriginal community Mulan in Western Australia will be obliged to ensure that homes and yards are clean, students attend school, rubbish bins are emptied twice a week and that children undertake frequent facewashing.

As a “quid pro quo” the community will receive $172,000 AUD in federal funding for petrol bowsers and fuel stations, while the Western Australian Government will provide regular testing for skin infections, worm infestations and the eye condition trachoma, which is widespread in Mulan.

Community administrator Mark Sewell approached Wayne Gibbons, a former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission chief executive, to initate an agreement four months, once it became clear that the face-washing program at the Mulan Catholic school was having a positive effect. The program, which has been running for eighteen months, has reduced the levels of trachoma among students from 80% to 16%.

Presently, the residents of Mulan must drive 44km to the nearby community of Balgo for fuel.

Acting race discrimination commissioner, Tom Calma, has approved the deal, despite concerns from members of the Mulan community. Aboriginal lawyer and land rights activist Michael Mansell claimed that placing conditions on funding is unlawful and unenforceable. The government proposal has been widely labelled as ‘humiliating’ to the community.

How To Choose Penny Stocks Set To Explode

By Daniel Hunter

If you want to get rich with Penny Stocks then you are going to need a strategy. Penny Stocks can a be a risky environment in which to trade but the rewards are commensurate with the risk. Penny Stocks have long been a favourite with penny stock investors due to their large percentage price moves. Penny Stocks are a volatile financial instrument and they are relatively low priced. This provides the big moves that can be profited from if correctly predicted.

Generally traders in Penny Stocks will use some form of technical analysis when deciding which stocks to trade. Technical analysis looks at the supply and demand situation for a stock, and then works out what the trends for that stock is. A trend line is usually developed for the stock. And then resistance levels and support levels are added to the picture. This will tell the trade what the range of prices the stock moves in and the trend line indicates in which direction the stock is heading.

If the penny stock breaks the resistance level it maybe an indication drops through the support level it could indicate that the stock is well priced and ready to buy. Of course the term support level is there for a reason. It may also mean that the stock is no longer supported by the market and is ready to head into free fall. This is where the art of penny stock picking comes into play. You need to understand your stock and why it is moving in the direction it is. Research here is key.

The next key thing you should understand is pivot points. Pivot points are the average of the high, low and close for the stock for that day. If you see the penny stock close above the pivot point this will set a new resistance level.

Another important concept in technical analysis is moving averages. Sometimes in the chaos of a stock moving up and down it can be difficult to see what the overall trend of that stock is. This is why you need to have moving averages. They smooth out the line and make it decipherable. Thanks to the wonders of computer technology a moving average can be calculated at the push of a button. The moving average that you will use will depend on your timeframe and the stock itself. Sometimes you may look at a five day moving average, other times a 60 day moving average is more appropriate.

A moving average is not only useful for smoothing out the lines; it can also show you crossovers. A crossover is whenever the prices move across the moving average. Traditionally it has been considered best practice to buy when the stock price moves above the moving average and to sell when the stock moves below it. There are also the terms convergence and divergence. This is where the trader examines the moving average from different time periods, such as 10 or 20 days. These are then plotted on the graphs and where they meet may indicate that a trend is ending. Typically it is better to buy if the trend has been down and sell if the trend has been up.

Technical analysis is the fundamental skill you need to master as a penny stock trader. While there will be other techniques that you will employ as a trader, understanding the basics of technical analysis is vital to your success.

Honda Civic tops Canada’s list of most stolen cars

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

The 1999 and 2000 year model Honda Civic SiR tops the list of Canada’s most stolen cars.

Consumer popularity also assures the cars will be popular with thieves. Its the second year in a row the Honda SiR has topped the list.

Rick Dubin Vice President of Investigations for the Insurance Bureau of Canada said “The Civics are easy targets.”

Dubin said that once stolen, the cars are most often sold to “chop shops” where thieves completely dismantle the vehicles. The automobile’s individual parts are worth more than the entire car.

The sheer numbers of the cars and their lack of theft deterrent systems make them thieves’ preferred choices.

1999 and 2000 Honda Civics do not come with an electronic immobilizer, however all Hondas from 2001 and onward are equipped with an immobilizer. Immobilizers will be mandatory on all new cars sold beginning September 2007. The devices enable an engine computer to recognize an electronic code in the key. If the code in the key and the engine don’t match exactly, the vehicle can’t be started.

In third place was the 2004 Subaru Impreza, while the 1999 Acura Integra came in fourth, with the 1994 Honda Civic rounding out the top five.

In sixth place, the 1998 Acura Integra, and the 1993 Dodge Shadow completed seventh.

When asked why early model vehicles are selected, he said that, “auto thieves continue to find it easier to steal older vehicles lacking an IBC-approved immobilizer. We’ve seen this trend developing for several years, and these results confirm it.”

Another Honda automobile, the 1996 year model Civic filled eighth place, with the 2000 German Audi TT Quattro in ninth.

The American 1996 Chevrolet/GMC Blazer rounded out the top ten.

None of the above cars had an electronic immobilizer.

Tornado touches down in Huntsville, Alabama

Friday, January 22, 2010

A tornado struck Huntsville, Alabama on Thursday, causing widespread damage and injuring around six people. Packing winds estimated at 150 miles per hour, the twister ranked as EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The tornado occurred at 5:30 P.M., amidst a flurry of severe weather reports in northern Alabama and Tennessee, bringing down trees and power lines.

As many as 10,000 people were left without power, and debris was strewn throughout the hardest-hit areas. “I’m shocked. I lived in this neighborhood all my life. I have never seen this kind of damage,” said Amanda Nelson, a resident of Huntsville.

David McCullough was at his home home when the tornado hit. He said, “I could not hear the train, but could hear my house shake. I also hear[sic] my neighbor’s roof pounding against my house.”

Although tornadoes in January are rare, they can strike at any time of the year. According to Governor Bob Riley, “The tornado that hit Huntsville last night is a reminder that severe weather can strike anywhere and at anytime.”

Iranian refugee child granted $400,000 in compensation for “psychological harm”

Saturday, March 4, 2006

Eleven-year-old Iranian refugee boy, Shayan Badraie, who suffered psychological injuries during his time spent inside Australia’s immigration detention centres, will receive a Federal Government payout of AU$400,000 in compensation. The government will also pay his family’s legal bill of more than $1 million.

Between 2000 and 2002 the Badraie family were incarcerated behind the razorwire of the (now mothballed) Woomera Detention Facility, a remote desert camp in outback South Australia – and later sent to the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. In 2001, video footage of his condition was smuggled out of Villawood, inciting national debate over Prime Minister John Howard’s controversial policy of detaining children.

Badraie’s family lawyer, Rebecca Gilsenan, said the family are “looking forward to living a normal life in the community. The settlement will enable the treatment he needs to somehow rectify the damage done in the detention centres. The fact the Government has settled the case indicates a serious concern on their part they were going to be found guilty of negligence,” Gilsenan told reporters.

Shayan, his father and stepmother arrived in Australia in 2000, and were sent immediately to the notorious Woomera desert camp. During his 17 months incarceration, Shayan stopped drinking, eating and speaking.

“He witnessed a series of incredibly traumatic and violent events, the sort of events no adult or no child should be exposed to,” Gilsenan said. “Within a year of being detained at the detention centre… he had developed psychiatric illness to the point of diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder and later depression,” she said.

The court heard evidence from former senior immigration official Philippa Godwin that detention could damage the mental health of refugees – directly contradicting the Government’s claims the centres were safe. Opposition immigration spokesman Tony Burke said: “Children should never have been put in detention and money will never undo the damage and pain.”

The Department of Immigration said the agreement was “no admission of guilt”. Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone says she does not believe a $400,000 is a backdown. Vanstone said an offer was made to the Badraie family’s lawyer some time ago but they turned it down.

Compared with similar countries, Australia has some of the toughest policies in the world against refugee arrivals. Policies include immediate mandatory detention of boat arrivals, the detention of workers and students who overstay their visas are sent to detention camps under harsh conditions. Immigration detainees often languish in limbo with some up to six years while their cases are being heard. These camps have been condemned by many international human rights groups.

Greens senator Kerry Nettle says “hundreds of children have been mentally scarred by their time in immigration detention and further claims are planned.” She blames the Federal Government’s policy of mandatory detention.

“The Government has accepted the responsibility for the health consequences of their policy of mandatory detention,” Senator Nettle said. “There is a raft of children, we are talking hundreds of children, and adults, who have had their mental health significantly impacted by the policy of mandatory detention.”

She rejected that the Federal Government deserve congratulations over settlement: “To have gone through these proceedings, and spent the amount of money they have spent, to put Shayan’s mother in the witness box for two weeks, is not an indication of a willingness and public accountability by the Government to accept responsibility for their actions,” Senator Nettle said.

Lawyer Rebecca Gilsenan says the landmark case may pave the way for more litigation by other refugee families. It is the first time the Department has conceded that a child has been psychologically harmed in its detention.

Gilsenan says the outcome sets a precedent for other detainees. “The problems that Shayan experienced were systemic problems rather than ones that were just specific to him, although the particular treatment that he received was disgraceful,” she said. “So it’s quite possible that there are other children or even adults out there who lived in a similar environment during that time in immigration detention and possibly have similar problems.”

She says she hopes the systemic problems highlighted in the case will now be addressed. “I can only hope that the Government takes notice of this and doesn’t continue to spend taxpayer money on having to compensate people for treating them in a disgraceful way in immigration detention.”
