American Indian Movement spokesperson dies, age 75

Vernon Bellecourt, once the primary spokesperson for the American Indian Movement, died recently at age 75. Bellecourt, an Ojibwa who fought for Native rights, was perhaps best known for his opposition to Native names and mascots for sports teams.

First in the headlines in 1972, Bellecourt organized a cross-country caravan of the Movement, to Washington. Once there, members of the group occupied the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices. His goal of international recognition for Aboriginal nations and their treaties found him meeting with figures like Libyan Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, and Palestine’s Yasir Arafat. In 1977 Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murder of two FBI Agents during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; Bellecourt led the campaign to free him.

Most recently, he visited Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to discuss getting free or cheap heating oil for reservations.

His work as president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media made a much wider known mark, though. Bellecourt emphasized that he believed such names perpetuated racial stereotypes, clouding the real identities and problems facing natives.

Teams with native-related names could almost guarantee on Bellecourt showing up at major games. He twice burned an effigy of Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians baseball team mascot, and both times was arrested. When the Washington Redskins of the National Football League made the Super Bowl, Vernon was there to protest. The United States Commission on Civil Rights was critical of such names by 2001, calling them “insensitive in light of the long history of forced assimilation”. Some newspapers have stopped using the names of teams with Native origins.

None of his “big four” targets have shown any indication of changing: the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cleveland Indians or the Atlanta Braves.

Post-season use of American Indian mascots were banned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 2005, suggesting the names are “hostile or abusive”. Bellecourt was pleased with the NCAA sanctions, but suggested such actions were only going “half way”.

The Florida State Seminole and the Illinois Illini were among the 18 colleges affected by the ban. Florida president T.K. Wetherell threatened legal action in response. The Florida Seminole tribes have endorsed the University’s usage of the name, but some out-of-state tribes were “not supportive”, according to the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Born WaBun-Inini, Bellecourt died from complications of pneumonia on October 13, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.

5 Questions To Ask A Driving Instructor

By Jenny Alexander

Learning to drive can be expensive and stressful; and there are many driving instructors all competing for your business. So how do you choose the right instructor?

Here are 5 questions you should ask any potential driving instructor before you pay them any money:

Do You Like Them?

The first question is one you should ask yourself. You will be spending many hours enclosed in a small stressful box taking instructions from this person and paying them for the privilege. If your personalities clash then you could be wasting your time and your money.

Engage them in conversation either in person, over the phone or by email. Do you think you will be happy in this person’s company? Do they seem patient?

What Are Their Qualifications?

What qualifications does this person have as a driving instructor? How long have they been doing it?

Your driving instructor must be an ADI or Approved Driving Instructor. An instructors vehicle will display either a green octagon or a pink triangle. This will have been issued by the DSA or Driving Standards Agency. The octagon means that they are fully qualified and the triangle means they are a licensed trainee.

A driving instructor will have a grading issued by the DSA, this will range from 1 to 6 with 6 being the highest. It is possible for the instructor to have a low or no grading and still be very good. This is because grading is gained by the instructor taking a test. If the instructor does not have a high grade they may have just chosen not to take the test. This is something you ask them about.

The information here is specific to the UK. If you are learning to drive in another country, you will probably have a similar system, but you should check with your local driving authority.

There is a compromise to be made with qualifications. The better qualified the instructor, the more they are likely to charge. It is up to you, if you feel confident then you may want to opt for a cheaper trainee as opposed to a more expensive veteran.

What Car Are You Going To Be Driving?

Usually in the UK driving lessons are done in a smaller lower powered car like a hatchback. This is easier for a beginner to get used to.

Is the car dual control? You should be taking lessons from an instructor in a duel control car. This means that the instructor can hit the brakes if something goes wrong. This makes the whole learning process safer and helps you feel more confident.

Is the car automatic or manual? In the UK, most people learn to drive in a car with a manual gear box. It is easier to learn in a car with an automatic gear box as it is one less thing to think about. The problem is that if you learn in an automatic car you can only legally drive an automatic car once you have passed your test.

How Soon Would You Like To Pass Your Test?

Ask your instructor about frequency of lessons and how long they think it will take to learn. This will depend on how often and how long lessons will be. It will also depend on their teaching style. If you are pretty confident, you may prefer an instructor who will push you through the process quickly and get you driving as soon as possible. If you are a little less sure, you may prefer an instructor who will take longer and go through the process more slowly and gently.

While you are at it, ask them what their pass rate is. Obviously the higher the pass rate the better.

If You’re Feeling Cheeky…

Finally ask them if they will give you a short free practice lesson. Many instructors will do this before you pay them any money and it gives you a chance to see what it is going to be like. It is the only real way to make sure you are happy before you go ahead.

Media speculate over possible presidential bid by Michael Bloomberg

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is prepared to spend one billion dollars of his own money for a 2008 White House bid, the Washington Times reports, citing his friends and “close associates” .

However, Mayor Bloomberg yesterday made light of Senator Chuck Hagel‘s suggestion that Bloomberg could run as an independent with Hagel as running mate. Bloomberg has so far denied that he is running but has not ruled out the possibility either.

Media reports speculate that Bloomberg is considering a run if the Democratic and Republican nominees cater more to the parties’ bases, leaving room for an independent candidate who can attract moderate voters for both camps.

TIME magazine reports that Bloomberg was at first ready to consider spending US$500 million for a presidential run.

Michael Bloomberg could have more money than either party candidates, former FEC chairman Michael E. Toner told the Times. Those funds would come in handy to mobilize the thousands of petitions needed to qualify for a run in some states.

The Washington Times also has reports of a Bloomberg adviser saying some people involved with John McCain‘s Presidential Campaign are prepared to leave and join Bloomberg’s campaign if he does indeed run.

Bloomberg’s advisers have also said that they have been studying and learning from Ross Perot‘s Presidential campaign in 1992. They have called and talked with Perot’s former advisers and campaign workers to learn from their mistakes and experience.

Bloomberg made his fortune with his company Bloomberg L.P., a financial news and data company. Forbes magazine ranked him 44th on a list of wealthiest Americans and 142nd on a list of billionaires worldwide. His net worth is estimated at US$5.5 billion.

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

FEMA employees pose as fake reporters during press conference

Correction — September 10, 2013 The headline should not contain the word fake: the employees posed as reporters; they didn’t pose as fake reporters, on the contrary they were fake reporters posing as real reporters. We aopologize for the error.

Friday, October 26, 2007

The United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is under fire after the agency held a fake press conference with fake news reporters in regards to individuals affected by the California wildfires and the assistance they could receive.

The agency called a press conference on Tuesday, giving the press only 15 minutes to show up. When many did not, FEMA brought in agency officials to pose as fake reporters and ask questions. The option for reporters to call into the conference was also available, but the ones who did call in only got to listen to the press conference, and could not ask questions. No reporters were actually present during the conference, parts of which were carried live on Fox News and MSNBC.

During the briefing, FEMA employees asked Deputy Administrator Harvey Johnson a series of what The New York Times called “decidedly friendly questions” such as “What type of commodities are you pledging to California?”, “What lessons learned from Katrina have been applied?” and “Are you happy with FEMA’s response so far?”. The briefing followed the format of a press conference, with FEMA’s press secretary at one point cautioning that he would allow just “two more questions”, then calling later for a “last question”. Officials who posed as fake reporters included the deputy director of public affairs Cindy Taylor and Director of External Affairs John “Pat” Philbin.

White House officials said that they do not condone FEMA’s actions and also state that they had no idea that the conference was taking place.

“FEMA has issued an apology, saying that they had an error in judgment when they were attempting to get out a lot of information to reporters, who were asking for answers to a variety of questions in regard to the wildfires in California. It’s not something I would have condoned. And they — I’m sure — will not do it again,” said Dana Perino, the White House’s press secretary in a statement.

FEMA apologizes for the mishap and says that their intentions were only to get the information to the citizens of California.

“[The purpose was] to get information out as soon as possible, and in trying to do so we made an error in judgment. Our intent was to provide useful information and be responsive to the many questions we have received. We can and must do better,” said Harvey E. Johnson, the agency’s vice administrator. “The real story — how well the response and recovery elements are working in this disaster — should not be lost because of how we tried to meet the needs of the media in distributing facts,” a FEMA statement said.

FEMA is currently deciding whether or not any officials should face punishment for the incident. One of the officials responsible, Pat Philbin, is going on to be the new head of public relations for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

This is not the first time that the Bush administration has come under fire for planting reporters at press conferences. In February of 2005, White House reporter Jeff Gannon was accused of being planted to ask softball questions to President Bush. FEMA itself had earlier undergone criticism during Hurricane Katrina for using disaster workers for public relations in 2005.

Firefighters rescue nearly a dozen animals in Buffalo, New York house fire

Friday, June 22, 2007

Buffalo, New York —A three alarm fire at a house owned by John and Evelyn Bencinich, two of the initiators of a lawsuit filed against the Elmwood Village Hotel proposal in Buffalo, required firefighters to rescue eight cats and two dogs in Buffalo, New York today.

At about 8:30 (eastern time) firefighters were called to the home on 48 Granger Place to put out a fire that had started in the basement. It quickly spread to the first floor where the main bathroom was destroyed. The fire did not spread to the second floor or attic.

Initial calls said that many animals were inside the house and firefighters quickly worked to rescue all the cats and dogs. At least one cat and one dog had to receive CPR and oxygen, but both are reported to be in stable condition. At least 3 cats are unaccounted for, but after a search of the house, the cats were not believed to have been inside at the time the fire started.

One elderly woman, Anna Bencinich, the mother of Evelyn, was rescued by neighbors who helped her from the burning house.

“There was smoke all over the house. The fire started in the basement and spread to a small portion of the first floor. Two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire and were transported to Erie County Medical Center,” said Division Fire Chief Thomas Ashe who also said that sections of the kitchen wall at the back of the house had to be torn out to stop the fire from spreading through the walls.

One firefighter is being treated for bite injuries to his face that he received while attempting to rescue a dog. The other firefighter was treated for injuries he received to his hand, which was believed to have been caused by glass or a cat scratching him. The names of the injured firefighters are not known. The injuries are said to not be life threatening.

According to witness reports, the home owners had a new water heater installed just last week, but it is not known if the fire was caused by the heater.

“We believe the fire was caused by an electrical (malfunction). An investigation is being conducted,” said Battalion Chief Joe Fahey who also added that they did not believe arson was the cause.

The Definition Of A Sedation Dentist In Redding, Ky

byAlma Abell

Sedation dentistry seems like an unfamiliar concept to most; however, it has easily recognizable features. Mainly, it refers to the use of sedatives directly before and during the dental appointment. These sedatives have varying degrees ranging from mild to moderate to deep, but all include relaxation and depression of the central nervous system. The reasons for using sedatives before and during an appointment can include patients who fear dentists and treatments, those who wish to have all dental care done in one day, and those who do not wish to have discomfort after the procedure.

There are two main forms of sedation: conscious and unconscious. During conscious sedation one can breathe, swallow, and be in control without anxiety. Unconscious sedation happens when a general anesthetic is used because the patient drifts off into a deep sleep. There are two types of anesthesia: nitrous oxide and local. In the first, nitrous oxide and oxygen (often called laughing gas) are breathed in through a nasal mask. The gas is odorless and the patient is awake during the procedure. This anesthetic is commonly used for children and is beneficial in creating a good experience with dentists and dentist visits. The second anesthetic is a numbing of the gums using an infiltration injection or a block injection. During an infiltration injection, the discomfort will be numbed in a localized area. During a block injection, an entire region is numbed like the lower jaw. Common side effects of sedation aids include dry mouth and hiccups.

To find a Sedation Dentist in Redding, one can choose Moore and Pascarella who are locals to the Red Bluff area, are certified by the California Dental Association, and who belong to the American Dental Association. These sedation dentists in Redding use the tactics described above to perform services including implants, dentures, root canals, wisdom teeth extraction, and fillings. Root canals help save teeth that are affected by decay or infection.

Drunk woman hits police car in Sydney

A woman with a blood alcohol reading of 0.14 has been arrested and charged after crashing into a police car in Kings Cross, a suburb of Eastern Sydney early this morning.

Police officials claim the 27 year old woman was driving a Volkswagen the wrong way down a one way street when she collided with a police car parked outside Kings Cross Police Station. Following the collision, the woman drove off. Police later found the woman’s car in a nearby alleyway where she and a male were standing.

Both the woman and her companion were taken to Kings Cross Police Station where they were questioned about the incident. While at the station, police conducted a breath test on the woman, which returned a reading of 0.14 – almost 3 times the blood alcohol limit of 0.05 in New South Wales. Further investigation revealed that the woman did not hold a driver’s licence.

The woman was charged with mid-range PCA (driving under the influence of alcohol), driving whilst unlicensed and failing to give particulars after an accident.

The woman was not injured in the accident and the police car suffered only minor damage.

Internally distributed DHS memo: al-Qaeda and Hezbollah may attack U.S. within three years

Thursday, November 15, 2007

In an exclusive report, Wikinews has obtained documents via Wikileaks that state al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and or single interest groups is planning to attack the United States homeland within three years, this according to a 27-page internally distributed memo circulated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on the threat of al-Qaeda. The document also details al-Qaeda’s threat in other parts of the world including Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and Pakistan. Wikileaks claims that the report was published on October 22, 2007.

“Al-Qaeda is intent in striking the U.S. homeland and the U.S. will face a persistent and evolving terrorist threat over the next three years. Al-Qaeda homeland plotting is likely to continue to focus on prominent political, economic, and infrastructure targets. Lebanese Hezbollah may (also) attempt to attack the Homeland and non-muslim, ‘single-issue’ groups will probably conduct attacks,” stated the report which also said that likely targets include the “mass transit sector and the aviation sectors.”

The alleged attacks include “mass casualties, visually dramatic destruction, significant economic aftershocks and fear amongst the U.S. population” using “improvised explosives, carried or vehicle borne. Existence of radical, self-generating cells suggest that the U.S. is not immune to what we judge as an expanding radical and violent segment in the west,” added the report.

Retailers across the U.S. have also reported to law enforcement agencies that customers purchasing cellular phones “visited multiple locations and purchased hundreds or thousands of phones, attempted to conceal their identity, were described as Middle Eastern and used gift cards or cash.”

“DHS and FBI assessed that most individuals engaged in such purchases were taking advantage of discounted prices in the U.S.and reselling the phones for profit overseas. DHS and the FBI also determined some buyers were associated to terrorist networks. The suspected motive was fundraising.” Some of these activities were recorded as far back as 2006.

In regards to Iraq, al-Qaeda “is committed to removing U.S. and Coalition troops and returning Iraq to an Islamic state governed with Shari’a law. In Africa they “sought mergers with groups in to further its agenda and has made frequent statements on the importance of Sudan and Somalia as fronts in the global jihad. And in Afghanistan is their “former safehaven and a key component of their strategy in promoting a global jihad.”

The report also states that the DHS has investigated a “serious” claim that the Fort Peck Dam will “be attacked by an improvised explosive device (IED) in January 2008.” It also investigated a claim that “10,000 lbs. of ammonium nitrate was reportedly stolen from a truck driver,” but the DHS states that both claims “were found to be not terrorism related.”

The report also adds that the DHS “lacks credible information to indicate planning for an attack against the Food and Agriculture sector,” but also states that they will continue to investigate the possibility of a threat.

To conclude the report, the DHS states that there is no current information to suggest an imminent attack on the U.S..

“[There has been an] interesting convergence of incidents; but no definite terrorism nexus” and there is no “discernable patterns or trends emerged to date to suggest preoperational activity.”
